What’s in Your Bag – Matt Writtle

Giving a voice to the person who is rarely heard is what drives documentary and portrait photographer Matt Writtle to document people and places from all walks of life including his current home of London.

“From a conscious age I have observed life with fascination. Being let into a strangers world is a privilege and my camera allows me to capture life’s nuances, document it’s cultural change, adaption and evolution, in an honest, arresting and insightful way.”

Matt’s photography has taken him around the world and has been published in numerous publications including The New York Times, The Guardian, The Independent, The Times, The Australian and London Evening Standard amongst others.

Getting your work published in some of the most prestigious newspapers in the world gets you noticed, so much so that Matt is now working for some of the most recognised commercial brands in the UK including Louis Vuitton, Procter & Gamble and Selfridges.

“One of the attributes my clients appreciate is being able to set up a mobile studio for a portrait quickly. Most of the celebrities I photograph usually give me between five and twenty minutes to do the shoot. When I can, I arrive early to recce the location and set up lights, but nothing can ever cater for the person your shooting being in front of you. Even a stand in person will look different to the main one.”

Like most photographers Matt spends a lot of time working on personal projects, he is currently working on a body of work called “Sundays; A Portrait of 21st Century England” where he documents how people living in England spend their time on this traditional day of rest.

So, the title of this post is “What’s in your bag” and you can see Matt’s kit in the image below with his list of equipment that he uses on a daily basis. I agree that the Leica should be at the top of the list!!!
