SanDisk unveiled the world’s first 1TB SD card at the Photokina 2016 photography show in Cologne, Germany. The announcement came just a couple of years after the company revealed a 512GB SD card at the same event.

The product is just a prototype for now, but it will probably be released soon. There’s no pricing information available yet, though if the 512GB card is sold now for more than £300, the next 1TB SD card won’t exactly be cheap. Nevertheless, keep in mind that this card has more storage space than you usually find in the base configuration of most laptops.

SanDisk also hasn’t shared the read or write speeds, but the company assured everyone that the card was specifically designed to adequately handle 4K, 8K, VR and 360-degree video when it officially becomes available.

In a press release about the memory card, Dinesh Bahal, the vice president of product management and content solutions at the business unit for Western Digital said the following:

“Showcasing the most advanced imaging technologies is truly exciting for us. Sixteen years ago we introduced the first SanDisk 64MB SD card and today we are enabling capacities of 1TB. Over the years our goal has remained the same: continue to innovate and set the pace for the imaging industry. The SanDisk 1TB SD card prototype represents another significant achievement as growth of high-resolution content and capacity-intensive applications such as virtual reality, video surveillance and 360 video, are progressing at astounding rates.”

  1. hehe, it will still be a bit of a wait until that appears in the shops. It’s basically just an announcement that they have an advance working prototype.
